Air cargo trends: Moving with the market

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported a 2.2% decrease in cargo volumes for North American air carriers in September 2023, continuing a trend noticed since the beginning of the year. The air cargo industry experienced significant growth during the COVID-19 pandemic and into 2022, but the fourth quarter of 2022 saw a surprising softening in global air cargo volumes. The challenges persisted in 2023, attributed to a reset in the global economy, higher interest rates, inflation, and lower consumer spending.

In September 2023, North American air cargo carriers, including Cargojet and WestJet Cargo, experienced a 2.2% decrease in cargo volumes, continuing a trend from early 2023. Cargojet, a major Canadian cargo carrier, noted challenges in 2023 attributed to global economic reset and decreased demand. WestJet Cargo, operating four dedicated freighters, aims to maintain cargo volumes close to 2022 levels and is exploring opportunities in the Calgary-Toronto corridor and Cuban imports.

Buffalo Airways, based in Yellowknife, witnessed significant cargo growth since the pandemic, operating a diverse fleet of 55 aircraft. It remains less affected by economic factors in northern regions. Canadian cargo operators are preparing for new opportunities in 2024, with varying strategies to navigate the evolving air cargo market.
